What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face. It is characterized by a dilation of small blood vessels, leading to diffuse or localized redness, flushing, and sometimes inflammation. The condition evolves in flare-ups, with calmer periods and others when symptoms become more visible.
Redness associated with rosacea
How to recognize rosacea?
Certain signs can help you identify it. The face may appear constantly flushed, similar to a sunburn that does not fade. The skin may become red after a hot shower, physical activity, or sudden temperature changes. Redness can also be triggered by alcohol consumption or spicy foods. Small visible blood vessels may appear on the cheeks or around the nose. In some cases, the eyes may feel irritated, dry, or appear red despite adequate sleep.
In the early stages, redness is often temporary. Over time, it can become persistent if the condition is not properly managed.
Common signs and symptoms
Rosacea can present in different forms. Persistent redness on the cheeks, nose, forehead, or chin is one of the most common signs. Fine visible blood vessels may appear on the skin’s surface. Some individuals develop small acne-like bumps. A sensation of warmth, burning, or stinging may accompany redness. In more advanced cases, a thickening of the skin, particularly around the nose, may occur.
Each person experiences rosacea differently. Symptoms may be mild in some individuals and more pronounced in others.
Who is most affected?
Rosacea primarily affects adults between the ages of 30 and 50. It is more common in individuals with fair skin, particularly those of Celtic or Northern European descent. Women are more frequently affected, although men may develop more severe forms. A family history and naturally sensitive or reactive skin also increase the risk.
Skincare routine adapted for rosacea-prone skin
Did you know?
Whether you are undergoing medical treatment or not, using skincare specifically formulated for rosacea-prone skin is essential. Gentle, targeted products help soothe redness, support the skin barrier, and maintain proper hydration. On the other hand, overly aggressive routines, frequent exfoliation, or irritating active ingredients can worsen symptoms and trigger flare-ups.
If you believe you may be affected, it is recommended to consult a healthcare professional, such as a dermatologist, for an accurate diagnosis. A trained esthetician can also guide you toward a dermocosmetic routine tailored to improve your skin’s comfort and appearance on a daily basis.
